Phonics and Reading

Children begin with lots of work on developing their speaking and listening skills before moving onto the Read Write Inc phonics scheme.  The focus on speaking and listening underpins all the teaching and learning throughout school.

In Nursery children have lots of listening, attention and focus play, games and learning sessions following the Read Write Inc scheme.  This continues into Key Stage 1 with daily phonics sessions along with speaking and listening activities

When the children are ready, they begin reading using the fully phonetically decodable Dandelion scheme.  After they have learnt all the set 1 sounds, this is augmented with the in-school reading scheme made up of a number of brands.  These are book banded to ensure consolidation and progression.

Children move through the levelled reading books until they are considered ‘free readers’ and are then able to choose from a selection of books appropriate for their age.
